Conversions & Substitutions: Is That A Jigger, Gill or Peck?

Would you like a jigger of water or a gill? Is that a peck of peppers or a pinch of pepper?

Sometimes measurements can be confusing. I remember being a young girl when my mom was teaching me the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon, definitely an important thing to know (ever added a tablespoon of salt when you were only supposed to add a teaspoon???).

I've come across some really, really old hand-written recipes in my quest for recipes that have been passed down the family tree. And some of the recipe measurements don't always make sense. If you've ever come across confusing measurements, or in case you ever do, here are the conversions:

Traditional Weights & Measures Conversion

Traditional ~ Standard
1 teacup ~ a scant 3/4 cup
1 wineglass ~ 1/4 cup
1 jigger ~ 1.5 fluid ozs
1 gill ~ 1/2 cup
1 coffee cup (Rachael Ray like using this!) ~ a scant cup
1 tumbler ~ 1 cup
1 pint ~ 2 cups
1 quart ~ 4 cups
1 peck ~ dry: 2 gallons; liquid: 8 quarts (32 cups)
1 pinch ~ what can be picked up between thumb & first two fingers
1 dash ~ less than 1/8 tsp
1/2 pinch ~ what can be picked up between thumb & one finger
1 saltspoon ~ 1/4 tsp
1 kitchen spoon ~ 1 tsp
1 dessert spoon ~ 2 tsps or 1 soupsoon
1 spoonful ~ 1 Tbsp more or less
1 saucer ~ 1 heaping cup (about)
1 egg white ~ 2 ozs (average)
1 lemon ~ 1.25 ozs of juice
1 square oleo ~ 1 tbsp margarine
